Who loves mountains?

My name’s Roger Hanney. I’m partner to Hailey and about to become a dad. I’m part of the HOKA ONE ONE Australia adventure. I love running (mostly grinding), especially on rugged trails and preferably somewhere steep or scenic.

Over several years I’ve had writing published by a number of publications and websites including The Big Issue, Trail Run Mag Aust/NZ,, Ultrarunning Magazine, and Outer Edge magazine.

The thing that makes me happiest on road is Coast2Kosci and I hope we see this iconic 240km Aussie ultramarathon continue in some form well into the future. On trail the choices are more difficult, and the more difficult path is always the better path to take. In 2019 I’ll be rallying for Great Southern Endurance Run in November as part of the longer term build for Hardrock Hundred Endurance Run (round 2) in 2020.

Mostly I write race/voyage reports. Sometimes I write about things to do with type 1 diabetes. Hopefully you’ll find something of interest from either of those two categories.

  1. Greetings! I am a bit pressed for time this morning, so I have only scanned your sight, but I drew an immediate connection as I am also a type 1 diabetic trail runner! I was wondering if we could possibly trade some emails, i would love to pick your brain about insulin and food habits in Ultra’s, as well as (if you know it) the history of various type 1 diabetics competing in the big races [UTMB, western states, Leadville, etc.])- Thank you and can’t wait to read more of your articles!!

    1. I am a bit in the dark about T1D history in big races too. Most impressive thing I have seen lately is Jarral Ryter’s MTB 6th place in the Tour Divide in 18 days – AMAZING!!! Marcus Grimm’s Sweet Victory is a great T1 runner blog, Missy Foy is the only T1 to reach Olympic Trials for US Olympic level marathon, is an excellent resource run here in Australia by Allan Bolton, who has been a T1 endurance athlete for over 25 years. Always happy to hear more.
      Food in ultras – I think simpler the better, that’s why I use eLoad Fly in my water. 100% highly refined maltodextrin with no discernible flavour at concentrations below 10%. No nausea from flavour or gut irritation as a result. Expensive but worth using for at least 50% of race day carbs. Just make sure the bags you carry it in are sealed because if it leaks and soaks up sweat it gets sticky then hard really fast.
      Potatos with salt and herbs are great real food on a run, halva is an awesome race food, Science in Sport isotonic gels are brilliant and digest easily but a bit bulky to carry, used to hate Clif Bloks but am now a big fan and each tube is worth two gels, Red Bull for the last 20-30km is hard to beat.

  3. Hi! I am a mom of a type 1 diabetic. My daughter is only 9.5, but has already run four 5ks, with me. One of our favorite runs was a trail run for JDRF.
    I can’t wait to read more about your events and how you handle your blood sugars during the endurance runs. Thank you for writing about this (please include lots of details). You are an inspiration! Good luck with all your 2014 goals.
